Burns: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Burns are a type of injury to the skin caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, or radiation. Burns can range from mild to severe and can cause anything from minor discomfort to permanent disfigurement or even death. It is important for everyone to be aware of the symptoms and causes of burns as well as proper treatments for them.

Symptoms:
The most common symptom of a burn is redness and pain in the affected area. Depending on the severity of the burn other symptoms may include swelling, blistering, peeling skin, white or charred skin and even muscle spasms.

Causes:
Burns can be caused by a variety of sources such as heat (including fire), chemicals (such as acids), electricity, sunlight and radiation. Burns can also be caused by friction (rubbing against something too hard) or contact with hot objects like pans or irons.

Treatments:
Treatment for burns depends on their severity but generally involves cooling down the affected area with running water for at least 20 minutes before applying an antibiotic ointment or cream and covering it with a sterile bandage. For more serious burns it is best to seek medical attention right away as they may require special treatments such as skin grafts or surgery in order to heal properly.
For mild sunburns aloe vera gel may be used in place of ointment/cream while ibuprofen can help reduce pain and swelling associated with sunburns if taken regularly over several days following exposure. It is important not to break any blisters that form during healing process as this could lead to infection which would require antibiotics from a doctor in order prevent further complications from occurring .
