Dealing with Fever at Home

If you or a loved one is suffering from a fever, it can be concerning and uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take at home to help reduce the discomfort and make sure the fever doesn’t get too high.

First, it’s important to know how to accurately measure body temperature. The most accurate way to do this is with a digital thermometer placed under the arm for three minutes or in the mouth for five minutes. Keep in mind that if your temperature is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) then you have a fever.

Once you know your temperature, there are several ways to help reduce it naturally:

1) Stay hydrated - Drinking plenty of fluids helps keep your body cool and prevents dehydration which can make symptoms worse.

2) Dress lightly - Wear light clothing or remove extra layers to help your body regulate its temperature better and cool off faster.

3) Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen - These medications can reduce inflammation that may be contributing to the fever as well as providing pain relief if needed. Make sure to check with your doctor before taking any medication though, as some may not be suitable for certain age groups or people with certain medical conditions.

4) Use a cool compress - Applying something cold directly on the forehead, neck, armpits, groin area and/or feet helps bring down body temperature quickly without having to take medication. You can use either cold water in a washcloth or frozen vegetables such as peas wrapped in cloths for this purpose (just make sure they don't get too cold).

5) Take lukewarm baths - If possible try taking lukewarm baths instead of showers as this will help regulate body temperature more effectively than cold water would due its ability to absorb heat more slowly than hot water would release it quickly when cooling off after showering/bathing . This can also provide some relief from any aches and pains associated with fevers too!

6) Get plenty of rest - Resting allows your body time recover from whatever illness is causing the fever so try not getting up unless absolutely necessary until you start feeling better again!

By following these simple steps at home you should be able to manage fevers safely without having to go see a doctor unless symptoms persist beyond 24 hours or become severe (such as difficulty breathing). Always remember that prevention is always better than cure so make sure everyone gets vaccinated on time against common illnesses like flu which often cause fevers!
