How to Avoid Getting the Flu



The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. It can cause mild to severe symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue. While it’s impossible to completely avoid getting the flu each year, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of infection.

1. Get vaccinated: The single best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get a yearly flu vaccine. Vaccines are available for free or at a low cost through your doctor’s office or local pharmacy.

2. Practice good hygiene: Washing your hands often with soap and water can help reduce the spread of germs that cause the flu. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as much as possible and cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough with a tissue or your inner elbow (not your hand).

3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick: If someone in your home is sick with the flu, try to keep them in a separate room and avoid contact as much as possible until they have recovered from their illness. If you must be around someone who is sick, wear a face mask if possible and wash your hands frequently afterwards .

4. Eat healthy foods: Eating nutritious foods helps strengthen our immune system so it can fight off infections like the flu more effectively . Make sure that you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day which contain important vitamins and minerals that help keep us healthy .

5. Get enough rest: Getting adequate sleep helps our bodies recover from daily stressors as well as illnesses like the flu . Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night if possible .
