How to Soothe Itching Caused by Hives



Hives, also known as urticaria, are red and itchy bumps that can appear on any part of your body. They are caused by an allergic reaction to certain foods, medications, or environmental triggers. The itching associated with hives can be very uncomfortable and distracting. Fortunately, there are several ways to soothe the itching caused by hives.

1. Take an antihistamine: Antihistamines help reduce the symptoms of allergies by blocking the action of histamine in your body which is responsible for causing inflammation and itching associated with hives. Over-the-counter antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or loratadine (Claritin) can help relieve itching from hives and should be taken as directed on the package label.

2. Apply a cold compress: Applying a cold compress to affected areas can help reduce inflammation and provide relief from itching caused by hives. A cloth soaked in cold water or ice cubes wrapped in a towel can be applied directly to the skin for up to 10 minutes at a time; however, avoid applying ice directly to skin as this could cause further irritation or damage your skin.

3. Use topical creams: Topical creams such as hydrocortisone cream may provide relief from itching associated with hives when applied directly to affected areas of skin 2-3 times per day for up to 7 days; however, consult your doctor before using any over-the-counter topical cream on your skin if you have sensitive skin or other medical conditions that may be affected by its use.

4. Take an oatmeal bath: Oatmeal has natural anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation and soothe itchy skin caused by hives; adding 1 cup of oatmeal flakes into a warm bath helps draw out toxins while providing relief from itchiness associated with hives naturally without any side effects.

5 Avoid scratching: Scratching only makes matters worse because it irritates the area further leading to more intense itchiness; instead try rubbing affected areas gently with your fingertips or use soft fabric such as cotton gloves when sleeping at night if you find yourself scratching unconsciously during sleep time hours.
