What You Should Know About Genital Warts Caused by HPV

Genital warts are a common type of sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear on the vulva, penis, anus, or in the throat. Genital warts are usually painless but can be itchy and uncomfortable. They can also cause embarrassment and psychological distress.

It’s important to know that genital warts are caused by HPV, a virus that is spread through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity with an infected person. While there is no cure for HPV, there are treatments available to reduce the symptoms of genital warts. These include topical creams and gels, cryotherapy (freezing), laser therapy, or surgery.

It's also important to know that HPV can cause other health problems besides genital warts. In some cases, it can lead to cervical cancer in women as well as other types of cancer in both men and women such as anal cancer and oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the throat). It's estimated that around 70% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV infections. That’s why it’s so important for everyone who is sexually active to get tested for HPV regularly and get vaccinated against it if they haven't already done so.

The best way to prevent getting genital warts or any other health issues related to HPV is to practice safe sex at all times by using condoms or dental dams during oral sex or intercourse with new partners or multiple partners. It's also recommended that you get tested for STIs regularly if you're sexually active with multiple partners and make sure your partner(s) gets tested too if they haven't already done so recently.

In conclusion, genital warts caused by HPV can be uncomfortable but they don't have to be a source of embarrassment because there are treatments available for them as well as ways to prevent them from happening in the first place such as practicing safe sex at all times with new partners or multiple partners and getting vaccinated against HPV if you haven't already done so recently
