How to Protect Yourself from Mosquitoes and Malaria



Mosquitoes and malaria are two of the most common health threats faced by people around the world. Mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever and West Nile virus, can be fatal if not treated properly. Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.

1. Wear protective clothing: Wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks when outdoors can help protect your skin from mosquito bites. If possible, choose light-colored clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. Also consider treating your clothes with insect repellent for added protection.

2. Use insect repellent: Insect repellents containing DEET or picaridin are effective at keeping mosquitoes away from your skin when applied correctly. For best results, apply the repellent according to the instructions on the label and reapply every few hours or after swimming or sweating heavily. Be sure to wash off any excess repellent before going indoors or sleeping in order to avoid skin irritation or other side effects.

3. Stay indoors during peak mosquito hours: Mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn so it’s best to stay inside during these times if possible in order to reduce your risk of being bitten by a mosquito carrying malaria or another disease-causing organism. If you must be outside during these times, be sure to wear appropriate clothing and use an insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin for added protection against mosquitoes carrying diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.

4 . Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water so it’s important to eliminate any sources of standing water around your home such as flower pots, buckets, old tires etc., that may provide an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying diseases like malaria or dengue fever . Be sure also check for any drainage issues around your property that could cause water buildup which could attract mosquitoes looking for breeding grounds near you home .

5 . Install window screens : Installing window screens on all windows in your home is another great way to keep out mosquitoes looking for a place to rest during daylight hours . This will help reduce their access into your home , making it less likely that they will bite you while you sleep at night , which is when many mosquito borne illnesses are contracted .

By following these simple tips , you can help protect yourself from mosquitoes carrying potentially deadly illnesses like malaria , dengue fever , West Nile virus , etc., while still enjoying time spent outdoors with family and friends !
