How to Get Through a Severe Migraine Attack

Migraines are a debilitating form of headache that can cause intense pain and nausea. If you suffer from migraines, it is important to know how to manage them and get through a severe attack. Here are some tips on how to get through a severe migraine attack:

1. Rest: When you feel the onset of a migraine, it is important to take some time out for rest. Find a comfortable place where you can lie down and relax in a quiet environment with dim lighting. This will help reduce the intensity of your headache and alleviate any associated symptoms such as nausea or dizziness.

2. Hydrate: Dehydration can worsen the symptoms of migraines, so make sure you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Water is best, but if plain water doesn’t sound appealing try drinking herbal teas or other beverages like coconut water which are known for their hydrating properties.

3. Medication: There are various medications available that can help treat the symptoms of migraines such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol). However, if your migraine persists despite taking medication, speak to your doctor about other options such as triptans which are specifically designed for treating migraines and can be prescribed by your doctor if needed.

4. Avoid Triggers: Certain activities or foods may trigger your migraine attacks so it is important to identify these triggers and avoid them where possible in order to reduce the severity and frequency of your attacks. Common triggers include stress, caffeine, alcohol consumption and certain foods like processed meats or aged cheeses so it might be worth keeping track of what you eat in order to spot any patterns that could be causing your headaches.

5 . Heat Therapy : Applying heat therapy on your head has been found effective at relieving tension headaches associated with migraines . Use either hot packs , warm towels , heating pads or warm baths depending on what works best for you . The warmth should help ease muscle tension in the head area which should hopefully reduce pain levels .

6 . Breathing Exercises : Taking deep breaths helps relax both body and mind which may help lessen the intensity of pain caused by severe migraine attacks . Deep breathing exercises also helps release endorphins , natural hormones produced by our bodies that act as natural painkillers .
