Mouth Ulcers: A Painful Reality

Mouth ulcers are a painful reality for many people. They can cause significant discomfort and disruption to daily life, making it difficult to eat, drink, and even talk. While the exact cause of mouth ulcers is not known, they are believed to be caused by a variety of factors such as stress, hormonal changes, vitamin deficiencies, acidic foods and drinks, or even certain medications.

The most common type of mouth ulcer is called an aphthous ulcer. These small sores typically appear inside the lips or cheeks and can range in size from 1-10mm in diameter. They may be white or yellow in color with a red border around them. Other types of mouth ulcers include geographic tongue (a condition where the tongue appears scaly or patchy), herpangina (a viral infection that causes painful sores on the roof of the mouth), and cold sores (caused by herpes simplex virus).

Mouth ulcers can be extremely painful but fortunately there are ways to manage them. Avoiding acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes as well as spicy foods can help reduce irritation. Over-the-counter topical treatments containing benzocaine may also provide some relief from pain associated with mouth ulcers. Additionally, reducing stress levels through exercise or meditation may help prevent new mouth ulcers from forming.

If symptoms persist for more than two weeks or become increasingly severe it is important to seek medical attention since these could be signs of other underlying conditions such as Crohn’s disease or celiac disease which require additional treatment options beyond those available over-the-counter products mentioned above .

Mouth Ulcers can be an extremely uncomfortable experience but thankfully there are ways to manage them so that one can still enjoy meals without pain and disruption to daily life!
