How to Reduce the Risk of Contracting a Waterborne Disease Caused by a Parasite

Waterborne diseases caused by parasites are a major health issue in many parts of the world. Parasites can contaminate water supplies, leading to serious illnesses and even death. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the risk of contracting a waterborne disease caused by a parasite. Here are some tips for avoiding parasites in your drinking water:

1. Boil Drinking Water: Boiling water is one of the most effective methods for killing parasites that may be living in it. Bring any drinking or cooking water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before consuming it or using it for cooking.

2. Use Filters: Water filters can be used to remove parasites from drinking and cooking water, as well as other contaminants such as bacteria and chemicals. Look for filters that are certified by NSF International and have been tested against parasitic cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia lamblia.

3. Avoid Contaminated Sources: Parasites can enter bodies of water through sewage runoff or animal waste, so avoid swimming, wading or drinking from contaminated sources whenever possible. If you do come into contact with contaminated sources, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean running water afterwards to reduce the risk of infection.

4. Practice Good Hygiene: It’s important to practice good hygiene when handling food or beverages that may contain parasites; always wash your hands with soap and clean running water before handling food or drinks, especially after using the bathroom or coming into contact with animals or their waste products.

5. Disinfect Food & Beverage Containers: When preparing food and beverages, always use fresh containers that have been washed in hot soapy water; then disinfect them by boiling them in hot (not lukewarm) tapwater for at least five minutes before use to kill any potential pathogens on their surface area including parasites such as cryptosporidium oocysts).

By following these simple steps you can help protect yourself from contracting a potentially deadly disease caused by a parasite found in contaminated drinking sources!
