Protect Yourself from Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a serious health condition that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. It is an infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Symptoms of pneumonia include coughing with phlegm, fever, chills, chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue. While anyone can get pneumonia, it is more common in people with weakened immune systems and those who are elderly or very young.

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself from getting pneumonia:

1) Get vaccinated: The best way to protect yourself from pneumonia is to get vaccinated against the pneumococcal bacteria that often cause it. Vaccines such as Pneumovax 23 and Prevnar 13 help protect against the most common types of bacterial pneumonia.

2) Practice good hygiene: Washing your hands regularly and avoiding contact with people who are ill can help prevent the spread of germs that cause pneumonia. It’s also important to avoid touching your face or putting your fingers near your nose or mouth after touching contaminated surfaces such as doorknobs or countertops.

3) Eat a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables helps keep your immune system strong so it’s better able to fight off infections like pneumonia. Also make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D from foods like milk and eggs or through supplements if needed.

4) Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity helps strengthen your lungs so they can better defend themselves against infections like pneumonia. Aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise such as walking or biking for adults aged 18-64 years old; children should get at least 60 minutes per day depending on their age group and activity level guidelines from their doctor.

5) Quit smoking: Smoking damages the delicate tissues in your lungs which makes them more vulnerable to infection including pneumonia caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Quitting smoking will not only reduce your risk for lung infections but also improve overall health in many other ways too!

By taking these steps to protect yourself from getting sick with pneumonia you can help reduce the chances of developing this serious illness while also improving overall health in many other ways too!
