Gastrointestinal Issues That Can Lead to Tongue Problems

Gastrointestinal issues can have far-reaching consequences, even affecting the health of your tongue. From ulcers to bacterial overgrowth, certain gastrointestinal conditions can lead to a range of tongue problems. Here’s a look at some of the most common gastrointestinal issues that can cause tongue problems.

Ulcers: Ulcers are open sores that can form on the stomach lining or in the small intestine, and they’re often caused by an infection or inflammation. Ulcers in the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) may cause pain and discomfort in the mouth, including on your tongue. If you have an ulcer, you may feel burning pain on your tongue and experience a metallic taste in your mouth. You may also notice white patches or spots on your tongue due to irritation from stomach acid leaking into your mouth.

Bacterial Overgrowth: Bacterial overgrowth occurs when there is an imbalance between beneficial bacteria and harmful bacteria in your gut. This can lead to digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Bacterial overgrowth can also affect other parts of the body, including your tongue. Symptoms include a furry feeling on the surface of your tongue and bad breath due to excess bacteria buildup in your mouth.

Food Allergies: Food allergies occur when our bodies mistake certain foods for threats and launch an immune response against them. This immune response can trigger inflammation throughout our bodies—including our tongues—and cause symptoms such as swelling, itching and burning sensations on our tongues after eating certain foods we are allergic to.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD is a chronic digestive disorder that occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus (the tube connecting throat to stomach). GERD often causes heartburn but it can also cause other symptoms such as soreness or burning sensation on one side of the throat or tongue due to acid refluxing up into these areas from below them .

By understanding how gastrointestinal issues like ulcers, bacterial overgrowth and food allergies affect our tongues we are better equipped with knowledge about what treatments might be necessary if we experience any type of oral discomfort related to these conditions
