Dealing With Dizziness: The Basics of Managing Vertigo Symptoms

Dizziness is one of the most common complaints among adults, and it can be especially bothersome when it's caused by vertigo. Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or feeling off balance, and it can be caused by a variety of conditions. Fortunately, there are some basic steps you can take to manage your vertigo symptoms and reduce dizziness.

The first step in managing vertigo symptoms is to identify the underlying cause. Common causes include inner ear infections, head or neck trauma, brain tumors, Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis (inflammation of the nerve that connects your inner ear to your brain), and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Your doctor can help you determine the cause with a physical exam and diagnostic tests such as an MRI or CT scan.

Once you know what’s causing your vertigo symptoms, your doctor may recommend medications such as antihistamines or anticholinergics for relief from dizziness. In addition to medication, there are several lifestyle changes you can make that may help reduce episodes of dizziness:

• Avoiding certain foods: Certain foods have been linked to an increase in vertigo symptoms such as caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. You should also limit consumption of spicy foods which may trigger episodes of dizziness in some people with vertigo.

• Exercise regularly: Regular exercise has been shown to improve balance and reduce episodes of dizziness associated with vertigo. It’s important to start slowly with low-impact exercises like walking or yoga before progressing to more strenuous activities like running or weight training.

• Get plenty of rest: Lack of sleep has been linked to increased episodes of dizziness associated with vertigo so be sure to get at least seven hours per night if possible. Additionally, avoid activities that require prolonged standing which may trigger bouts of dizziness due to decreased blood flow in the head area.

• Avoid sudden movements: Sudden movements such as bending over quickly can trigger bouts of dizziness so try not move too quickly when getting up from sitting down or bending over for something on the floor – instead take things slow! Additionally try not look up too quickly when moving from lying down to sitting up – this will help decrease any sudden shifts in blood flow which could lead to feelings of lightheadedness and/or nausea associated with vertigo symptoms.

Finally if you experience frequent episodes of severe dizziness accompanied by vomiting seek medical attention immediately as this could be indicative a more serious underlying condition requiring further evaluation by a medical professional!
